It's a Damn Cruise Ship

"We’re so structured and micromanaged, this isn’t a world anymore, it’s a damn cruise ship.” - Chuck Palahniuk

There's a large part of our society that is perfectly content living the same lives as everyone else; go to college, get a comfortable little corporate job, go on vacation two weeks a year, play golf on the weekends, get an expensive car and some nice designer clothes. There are others that wouldn't be caught dead in that situation.

It's not a bad thing to be one way or the other, but it's safe to say that our society favors the former type. That's why it's comforting to see things like The Builders Jam in Hannover, Germany where people come together, not because of financial gain, or something to add to their resumé, but simply out of love for what they do.

It is also heartbreaking to see corporate interest and fear of breaking the status quo of normal, boring, pleasant lives interfere with a good thing, like what happened in Oakland last year. This DIY skatepark was not making the city any money, so they had it destroyed to make room for a billboard, because if there's one thing Oakland needs, it's another billboard.

Of course we all need money, but it is also important to take the time to do something different for once, to break the mold (sorry for the cliché) of the wake up-breakfast-work-dinner-sleep routine that so many of us fall victim to. Let's welcome some change to our boring ass cities and do something fun for once.

The New Silver Screen

Why television is better than film lately

I've heard people say that there's nothing good on TV lately. This is far from the truth; they just need to know where to look. Television shows have the ability to build characters over time to give them incredible depth. Now coming into the fifth season, Mad Men's Don Draper can give the viewer an entire story with a two-word response.

What's more are the complex storylines and suspense that builds when you fear one of your favorite characters might be in danger. A movie might have a two-hour buildup to a suspenseful moment, but a TV show can have an entire season of buildup to those moments we all can remember. How many times have you seen the credits come up after a cliffhanger as you let out an aggrivated yet excited groan? and Who can forget this scene from Lost? (SPOILER ALERT)

AMC has been superb lately with shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead. Their newest venture, The Killing, does not disappoint either. If you missed the first four episodes, they are still On Demand, as well as on the AMC website. They even have a suspect tracker to help you decide who the killer might be. With all this extra web content, watching the show is just the beginning of the experience.

A Little Time-Lapse Video

Our good friend and co-owner Bryan Liscinsky put out a video that makes those of us on the East Coast pretty jealous. I don't know about you, but I can't wait for summer.

Video Days Reunion

The boys from the iconic skate video, Video Days, got together recently for a photo shoot and to reminisce about the good times they had 20 years ago. Does it really feel like 20 years? I'm sure that makes a lot of skateboarders feel pretty old. Anyway, here's some gold from skateboarder mag. You even get to see Mark Gonzales, Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson, and Jordan Richter recite the song Jason Lee sang at the end of his part.

Top 5!

Here is my list of the top 5 albums of 2010. It was not easy, as we saw (or heard) tons of amazing albums this past year.

5. Mark Ronson and the Business Intl. - Record Collection
Some people see Mark Ronson as just some spoiled kid with a turntable. Say what you might about the person, this album is catchy as hell. Why this didn't get more publicity in the US is beyond me.

4. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
A bit of a departure from the Sufjan we know, I warmed up to this album after seeing it performed live. The closing track, Impossible Soul is possibly his best yet (and longest, at 25 minutes).

3. The Black Keys - Brothers
This Ohio duo delivers more power than most bands with 4 members. Glad to see someone bringing simplicity back to rock and roll without seeming like they belong in a cell phone commercial. They actually won an MTV music award for breakthrough video?

2. Surfer Blood - Astrocoast
Because this album came out in January, I almost thought of it as a 2009 album. Listen to it when the weather warms up and you'll see why I put it at number 2.

1. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
"Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock" sums up the feel of The Suburbs pretty appropriately. The sheer amount of plays this album got from my iTunes gave no doubt that this is the best album of the year. This is one of those albums you can listen to completely, and not realize you finished the whole thing until you hear the first track start playing again. For your listening pleasure: Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

Honorable mentions in no particular order:
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Beach House - Teen Dream
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot, The Son of Chico Dusty

Less Hatin' More Skatin'

Been working on this shirt for a while now, and it's finally ready for printing. The constant hate, especially online is getting out of hand. We're all skateboarders at the end of the day, so how about a little less hating and a little more skating. We will keep you updated when these tees are available.

September 27, 2010

Man, September is almost over already. Time is flying by. Meant to post this a while ago, but better late than never, right? Apparently Dylan Rieder made this video part as a sort of redemption for his Mind Field part, which was good, but this Gravis part is better. Also be sure to check out his Epicly Later'd episode on This guy is someone to look out for.
